Provocation & Opinion
Exploring our national current events
This week in reading we explored the different types of these current Eyaka Nidhi and I were finding out different information about NZ current news. This week for writing we learning about PIE, P is for persuading, I is for inform and E is for entertainment and we looked at some news articles that were happening in NZ. We created a Google Map showing where the article took place. We were supposed to find articles that relate to Timeliness which means that is happening right now, Relevance which means a story that happened nearby or is concern to the local in interest, Magnitude which means A story that is great in size of number or a lot of people died, Unexpectedness means something unusual, or something that occurs without any warning, Impact means news that will affect a large number of readers. Reference to someone famous or important means a news about the prominent person, Oddity means a unique situation, Conflict which means a major struggle in the news, Reference to something negative means the bad news sells more than good news, Continuity means a continuation of a story that has been in the news. Emotions mean emotions such as jealousy, love or hate, increase interest in a story and progress which means new hope or new improvements. I had a lot of fun doing this and while doing this I learned what is happening around me.
Explanation: should NZ ban plastic straws?
Hello, my name is Taheesha and in my opinion, we should ban plastic straws because of our environment, marine life, and pollution. Plastic turns into something called microplastic that can get in the sea pretty easily. About 175 million straws are found in the sea or in animals. Around 100,000 marine mammals die each year because of plastic. Did you know every day approximately 8 million microplastic find their way into the oceans! Weighing up to 269,000 tonnes of plastic. So much of sea creatures are found dead even just by a few straws or microplastic in their body or system. The animals are dying by just a straw, you don't want that right? NO, we need to take part in the world! Would you like if there’s no fish in the sea and no animals left? Would you like it if there is no food, no clean water in the sea for marine creatures to live?
Pollution. Have you ever heard of that word? Pollution what does it mean? Well, pollution is something that is happening in our world. Pollution is something that comes into the environment that is dirty, unclean or has a harmful consequence. Toxic waste dumped into the water which means its hurting sea creatures. For example, a poor turtle got a four-inch (Ten cm) straw stuck in its nostrils. It is crazy to see how harmful plastic straws are. Did you know that it takes 500 years for a plastic straw to biodegrade. Plastic straws are unhealthy, poisonous and hurtful!
This is the main reason why animals are either getting hurt or sadly dying. I don't want this going on and on. Hopefully, we all decide to ban straws and start making changes. The world needs to be saved so we have to start now because we only have one.
